"Shake Your Sakura" Japanese White Sauce
Whenever we got out to one of the few Japanese steak houses, one of the stars of the show is their white sauce. And for years, I have been trying different recipes to replicate this sweet nectar. I finally found one that was very close, and then tweaked it to my liking.
This recipe is as easy as Pamela Anderson. I would encourage you to play around with it and see how you like it. (The sauce, not Pamela Anderson.) A word of advice, let this sit over night. This is a sauce that needs to sit so all the ingredients can bathe together. Serve with “Don’t Touchy My Hibachi” Chicken and Fried Rice.
Ingredients
- Set List
- Click here for a printable version!
- 1 Cup Mayonnaise
- 1/4 Cup Water
- 1 tsp Tomato Paste
- 1 tbsp Melted Butter
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon Paprika
- 1 dash Cayenne Pepper
Instructions
- Whisk all ingredients together until the sauce is creamy. Do not add all the water. I add a little at a time until I get the consistency I want.
- Let it sit over night, or a minimum of two hours to let all the flavors melt together.
Note:It seems I found this recipe on japanese-steakhouse-white-sauce.com

Try siracha and Japanese mayo
Sounds good, I think I will! Thanks for the suggestion!
This is called Spicy Mayo. It’s what they put in the sushi.
Sounds good but try it with real butter instead of crock ( oil). I’m sure you will taste the difference.
I will. I have been trying to use real butter, instead of the crock stuff. Thanks!
This is great! I was just talking to someone the other day about this stuff, my husband and I love it and were wondering what it was, our place just calls it “yum yum sauce” and wouldnt tell us what it was lol! Thanks for the recipe!!!
Thanks, Katie! It took me forever to find a recipe and then tweak it. Most recipes I found were to heavy on the mayo. And the restaurants are pretty tight lipped over it. Thanks for reading!
I’m a sushi chef and what you are eating at the japanese restaurant is spicy mayo, which consists of sriacha, Japanese mayo, honey, and sesame oil.
I have not ventured into Sushi recipes yet. I’ve had a lot of people tell me to try making it with sriacha. I think I will. Thanks for reading!

I think a little rice vinegar adds a nice flavor.

Thank you! Let me know how you like it.
i thought this was a good base recipe… Maybe I have had a different type of “yum yum” sauce, but I had to add a substantial amount of sugar to it and wished I had put less tomato paste in it. Thank you for the starter though.
That’s the beauty of this recipe. You can add what you want to suit your taste. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for this recipe! Cannot wait to try it!

It’s a hit at my house.
Hey Rock Star Dad! I am made this last night and can’t wait for it to finish in the refrigerator so that we can use it on our rice tonight. Can I have your permission to re-post this on my blog next week? My readers would love it. Giving you the credit for the recipe, of course.

Absolutely, Brandy…and thank you! Let me know how it turns out.
Quick question, could ketchup be used in place of the tomato paste? Or would that take the place of the sugar and tomato paste? Just was wondering, trying to use what I have on hand.
Thanks! Love the hibachi chicken recipe.
Yes. I have done it a few times when I have run out of tomato paste. It can give it a more sweeter/ketchup taste. It tastes better with tomato paste, but if you’re in a pinch, ketchup will work too. Thanks for the comment! Glad you love the hibachi chicken. I just made it over the weekend!
